What Is Heat Lightning? (It Isn't a Real Thing)

Silent flashes on a warm horizon are not a separate kind of lightning. They are ordinary strikes from a storm too far away for the thunder to reach you.

On a warm summer night you see the horizon flicker. No thunder, no rain, no wind. Somebody calls it heat lightning and everyone relaxes.

It is worth knowing that heat lightning is not a distinct weather phenomenon. There is no separate category of lightning produced by heat. What you are watching is completely ordinary lightning, from a completely ordinary thunderstorm, that is simply too far away for you to hear.

Why the thunder goes missing

Every lightning strike makes thunder. The channel superheats the surrounding air to something like five times the surface temperature of the sun in a few millionths of a second, the air explodes outward, and that shockwave becomes the sound you hear.

Two things stop that sound from reaching you.

It spreads out and fades. Sound loses energy with distance. By ten miles or so, thunder has usually dropped to somewhere between faint and inaudible, depending on wind, terrain, and how much other noise is around you.

It bends upward. This is the bigger effect. Sound travels faster in warmer air, and on a summer evening the air near the ground is often warmer than the air above it. That gradient refracts the sound waves upward, away from your ears, curving the thunder over your head and out of range. The warm conditions that produce the name are doing something real, just not what the name implies.

The practical result is a fairly hard ceiling. Past roughly ten to fifteen miles, you reliably see lightning you cannot hear.

Why it looks like a diffuse glow

The other half of the effect is visual. At that distance you are usually not seeing the bolt itself, which sits below your horizon or behind the storm's own cloud mass. You are seeing its light scattered through the cloud tops, which turns a sharp channel into a soft sheet of light.

That is also why it seems to flicker rather than flash. A single lightning flash often contains several return strokes over a couple of tenths of a second. Up close that reads as one bright event. Diffused through miles of cloud, it reads as a pulse.

Does it matter?

Somewhat, and in a way the folk name works against.

Calling it heat lightning suggests a harmless byproduct of a hot day. What it actually tells you is that there is a live thunderstorm within about fifteen miles of you, producing cloud-to-ground lightning right now.

That storm may be moving away, in which case nothing happens. It may be moving toward you, in which case the silent flickering was your earliest possible warning and you had no way to judge which it was by looking. Storms travel at 20 to 40 miles per hour, so fifteen miles can close in well under an hour.

There is also the less common case worth respecting: strikes can reach ground ten to fifteen miles from the parent storm, out ahead of the rain, under sky that looks clear. If you can see flashes, you are not automatically outside the range of one.

The useful version of the question

"Is that heat lightning?" is not really answerable by looking, and the answer would not help much anyway. The question worth asking is which direction the storm is moving and how far away it actually is.

That needs data rather than eyes. Lightning Tracker plots strikes from NOAA's GOES satellite as they are detected, so a storm flickering silently on your horizon shows up as what it is: a cluster of real strikes, at a real distance, tracking in a direction you can see on the map. You can set an alert radius and be told if it starts closing on you.

The old name is harmless enough as long as you know what it is describing. It is not a different kind of lightning. It is the same kind, far enough away that you got the picture without the sound.
